On October 13, 2026, Shopify launched Shopify Shop MCP, a hosted server at mcp.shop.com that lets any AI agent search more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog, build a cart and check out with Shop Pay, according to Shopify's developer changelog. Eight days later, Walmart opened Walmart and Sam's Club to approved AI agents through its own MCP server, Agent Gateway.

For a Shopify merchant, the practical change is that your products can now be found and bought by agents Shopify has no partnership with, without you changing a setting. The agent never sees your theme, your hero images or your copy. It sees structured catalog data, filters it hard, and either completes checkout in the chat or sends the shopper to your site. Both of those moments now decide who gets the order.

What is Shopify Shop MCP?

Shop MCP is a hosted server at mcp.shop.com that lets any AI agent speaking the Model Context Protocol search, compare and buy Shopify products. Shopify's Shop MCP docs name Claude and ChatGPT as clients and say any MCP client can connect. Search needs no API key, per the launch changelog, and higher limits come with a key from the Shopify Dev Dashboard.

The server exposes 17 tools in four groups: search and product lookup, carts and checkout, account and orders, and five "spend request" tools for paying at stores that are not on Shopify. Catalog, cart and checkout documents follow version 2026-08-25 of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), the open standard Google and Shopify back. If you need a refresher on how UCP compares with OpenAI's protocol, see our explainer on ACP vs UCP.

It complements the WebMCP checkout tools Shopify shipped on September 28 for agents running inside a shopper's browser; Shop MCP serves agents that never open one.

How does checkout work in Shop MCP?

The agent builds a cart with the selling merchant, and the shopper always confirms; signed-in Shop users can pay with Shop Pay inside the chat. Shopify's checkout guide describes three paths.

  1. Shopper is signed in with Shop. Saved addresses fill in delivery and the merchant can offer Shop Pay. The agent must show the payment methods and let the shopper choose; the guide tells agents to never pick a default. The agent then calls complete_checkout and polls get_checkout until it returns a completed status with an order.

  2. Shopper has no Shop account or is not signed in. Cart and checkout tools still work, but saved addresses and Shop Pay do not. When the merchant offers no payment instruments, or the checkout needs a step the agent cannot do, the agent passes a continue_url and the shopper finishes on the merchant's own checkout page. Shopify tells agents to share that link in every case, even when they could complete the purchase themselves.

  3. The store is not on Shopify. A signed-in shopper approves the store, items, saved card and a spending limit inside Shop. Shop then issues card details for that one purchase, which the agent uses on the store's own checkout. Shopify calls these spend requests.

Orders placed through the first two paths land in your Shopify admin like any other order. At launch there were no webhooks, so agents check status by polling.

How is Shop MCP different from Shopify Catalog, Agentic Storefronts and the Dev MCP?

Shopify Catalog is the data, Agentic Storefronts are named partner channels, the Dev MCP helps developers build, and Shop MCP is the open shopping door.

How are Walmart, Amazon and other platforms handling AI shopping agents?

Platforms are splitting into open and closed camps: Shopify and Walmart now admit agents on their own terms, while Amazon blocks unauthorized buying agents.

  • Amazon, September 20. Amazon cut off Meta's Muse agent from buying on Amazon.com. A spokesperson said third-party purchasing apps should operate openly and respect a service provider's decision about participating, Adweek reported.

  • Shopify and Meta, September 21. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced a partnership to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores through Muse, ContentGrip reported.

  • Walmart, October 21. CEO John Furner unveiled Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved agents search inventory and buy at Walmart and Sam's Club. Agent Profiles, rolling out next month, let customers require approval per purchase or set a spending limit, and Walmart says it will block agents that break its rules, per TechCrunch.

Are your products included in Shop MCP?

Almost certainly, if they meet Shopify Catalog's eligibility rules, because eligible products are added automatically and merchants cannot opt out of the Catalog itself. Shopify's Catalog help page says you can stop individual agentic storefronts from reading your products, but the products stay in the Catalog for other uses. As of October 27, Shopify's merchant help pages do not mention Shop MCP by name.

The eligibility requirements are short: a title, at least one image, a price above zero, publication to your online store (or Hydrogen or headless) with a valid product URL, and not unlisted or hidden from search engines. Excluded categories include alcohol, tobacco, weapons, prescription and medical products, event tickets, services and add-ons, and, notably, uncategorized products. A product with no taxonomy category is simply not in the pool.

What product data does an agent read through Shop MCP?

Agents read structured Catalog fields, not your page design, and several of those fields are inferred by Shopify when your own data is thin. The Global Catalog reference lists title, HTML description, URL, categories, price range, media with alt text, options, variants (SKU, price, availability, seller and refund policy link) and rating value and count.

shopify shop mcp

Shopify marks several fields as inferred: description, options, attributes such as material and occasion, tech specs, top features and unique selling points. Its docs say to treat them as discovery and merchandising signals rather than merchant-authored text. In plain terms, if you leave a gap, Shopify's model fills it with its own reading of your product.

Search is equally literal. Per Shop's search docs, agents can search by text, by similar product, by photo, or look up to 50 items by GTIN, UPC, URL or ID. Filters for Size, Color, Target gender, price, ship-to country, taxonomy category, rating and availability are hard requirements: a product that fails one is not returned. A color that lives only in your title, or a variant option called "Option 1", gives the Color filter nothing to match. Shopify also tells agents to keep the shopper's own wording in the query, so the vocabulary in your descriptions matters. An independent No Hacks test of 1,305 Catalog searches on launch day found that swapping "fragrance-free" for "unscented" kept only two of the top ten products, that products with more reviews tended to rank higher, and that full ingredient lists shown on 36 of 50 merchant pages appeared in catalog text for only 5. We cover that mapping in our guide to catalog enrichment for AI shopping agents.

What happens after the agent hands the shopper to your site?

The shopper lands on your checkout or product page with a question already answered, so the page must continue that conversation rather than restart it. Most coverage stops at the hand-off, yet that is where many orders are won or lost.

There are two common landings. The first is the continue_url to your checkout, used whenever the shopper is not signed in to Shop or the checkout needs a step the agent cannot complete. The second is your product URL, which every Catalog result carries and which agents show when a shopper wants to look before buying. In ChatGPT, which per Shopify's Agentic Storefronts page does not offer direct checkout, purchases are completed on your store's checkout.

That visitor is different from an organic browser. They asked for something specific, such as a trail running shoe for wide feet under $120, and the agent already matched them to one SKU. A generic page that leads with a lifestyle banner and buries width and fit makes them hunt for the answer they were promised. A page that opens on the attributes the agent cited, confirms fit and returns, and keeps the chosen variant in the cart path converts the intent it inherited. We break down what that page needs in our guide to funnels that convert AI agent traffic.

Do AI-referred shoppers really convert better?

Shopify's own data says yes, with AI-referred sessions converting 80% better than organic search from April to June 2026, though it published no sample size. The figure comes from Shopify's Entrepreneur Effect data hub, which also says AI-referred order values were 14% larger and that AI drove nearly twice as many first-time customers as other channels. The hub does not name the comparison group for the 14% figure.

An earlier Shopify Enterprise post on Q1 2026 data put the conversion gap at nearly 50% for sessions starting on a product page, with average order values 14% higher than organic search. That post also notes that Google AI Overviews referrals are counted as organic, so the true AI share is likely understated. Treat both as directional vendor data, not benchmarks for your store. For tactics on that traffic, see our guide to converting AI-referred shoppers.

What should you fix in your Shopify catalog first?

Fix the fields agents filter on: taxonomy category, named Size and Color options, barcodes, spec-rich descriptions, reviews and complete store policies. Shopify's optimization guidance asks for accurate, detailed product information; here is the order we would work in.

  1. Assign a Shopify taxonomy category to every product. Uncategorized products are excluded, and agents filter by category ID. A tag or collection is not a substitute.

  2. Name variant options Size and Color, with consistent values. Those are the attribute filters Shop MCP supports. "Queen" everywhere, never "Qn" in one place and "Queen size" in another.

  3. Add GTINs or UPCs. Agents can look products up directly by barcode.

  4. Write specs into the description. Material, dimensions, ingredients, fit and care, in the words shoppers use, so Shopify does not have to infer them.

  5. Grow review counts. Agents can filter on a minimum rating and review count, so thinly reviewed products can drop out of filtered searches.

  6. Complete refund, shipping and terms policies and the Agentic Storefronts knowledge base, because agents answer return and delivery questions from them.

  7. Test like an agent. Shopify's shop CLI runs the same Catalog search; query your own category in shopper language and see who comes back.

  8. Audit the landing page. Your top products' pages should lead with the attributes agents cite, not a generic hero.

What hasn't Shopify said about Shop MCP yet?

Shopify has not published merchant fees, a Shop MCP opt-out, ranking logic, or how agent-completed orders should be attributed in analytics.

  • Fees. No Shop MCP-specific merchant fee has been announced beyond standard payment processing.

  • Opt-out. The Catalog page lets you block individual agentic storefronts, but does not say whether that affects Shop MCP.

  • Ranking. Shopify documents filters and context but not how it orders results within them.

  • Attribution. Orders reach your admin, but an in-chat Shop Pay purchase never loads your storefront, so site analytics and ad pixels record no visit.

  • Multi-store baskets. Each checkout belongs to one merchant, so a basket across three stores means three checkouts.

  • Agent identity. The docs do not say how a merchant can tell which agent placed an order, the issue at the heart of Amazon's dispute with Meta.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shopify Shop MCP?

Shop MCP is a hosted Model Context Protocol server at mcp.shop.com that Shopify launched on October 13, 2026. It lets any MCP-compatible AI agent, such as Claude or ChatGPT, search more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog, build carts, complete Shop Pay checkout after the shopper confirms, and track orders. Search requires no API key.

Can merchants opt out of Shop MCP?

Shopify says merchants cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog, which Shop MCP searches. You can stop individual agentic storefronts, such as ChatGPT or Copilot, from accessing your products, but as of late October 2026 Shopify's help pages do not say whether those controls apply to Shop MCP or mention it by name.

Do shoppers need a Shop account to buy through Shop MCP?

No. Carts and checkout work without signing in. Without a Shop account, saved addresses and Shop Pay are unavailable, so the agent passes a link and the shopper completes payment on the merchant's own checkout page. Signed-in Shop users can pay with Shop Pay inside the chat after choosing a payment method.

Is Shop MCP the same as the Shopify Dev MCP server?

No. The Shopify Dev MCP server is a developer tool that lets coding assistants search Shopify documentation and API schemas while building apps and themes. It never touches shopping or sales. Shop MCP is a shopping server that lets AI agents search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete checkout for shoppers.

Does Shopify charge merchants extra for Shop MCP orders?

Shopify has not published any Shop MCP-specific merchant fee as of late October 2026. Orders placed through Shop MCP appear in the Shopify admin like any other order. Merchants should watch Shopify's changelog and help center for fee, attribution and opt-out details, which remain the main open questions after launch.
