What Is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)? A Guide for DTC Brands
UCP is Google's open standard for agentic checkout in AI Mode and Gemini. What it covers, who backs it, what merchants need, and where it stands today.

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open-source standard that Google announced on January 11, 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It gives a shopper's AI agent one common way to find products, build a cart and check out with a merchant, without a custom integration for each store.
UCP is now live in a limited form in Google's AI Mode and Gemini, and it is still rolling out. This guide covers what it does, who backs it, what a merchant needs, and what a DTC brand should do this quarter.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is a shared specification for the steps between "the shopper asked an AI" and "the order is placed." Google describes it as covering the shopping journey from discovery through post-purchase support, and says it is compatible with Agent2Agent (A2A), the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
The code and spec are open under the Apache 2.0 license. Google built the first reference implementation, which powers buying in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. But the standard itself is not a Google product: the spec lives on a public repository and has its own governance.
Because "agent" here means the shopper's own AI agent, UCP is really a contract between that agent, your store and your payment provider. The retailer stays the seller of record in all of it.
Who launched UCP, and who backs it?
Google announced UCP at the National Retail Federation conference on January 11, 2026. The co-developers named in Google's announcement are Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. More than 20 companies endorsed it at launch, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Adyen, American Express and The Home Depot.
The official UCP site now lists a wider group of co-developers, including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce and Stripe. A press release dated April 24, 2026 said Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce and Stripe joined the UCP Tech Council, the body that guides the protocol's technical direction.
Why this matters for a brand: most of the large commerce platforms and payment companies are building toward the same spec. That lowers the risk of betting on it.
How does UCP work?
The spec is built from a few pieces.
Piece | What it does |
|---|---|
Discovery profile | A business publishes a JSON manifest at |
Capabilities | Checkout is the root capability. Cart, order, catalog and identity linking sit alongside it |
Extensions | Add-ons to a capability, such as discounts and fulfillment |
Payments | Payment instruments (what the shopper pays with) are separated from payment handlers (who processes it) |
Transports | REST is the core transport, with MCP, A2A and an embedded option also defined |
An agent reads the profile, creates a checkout session through the business's API, updates it (a discount code, a shipping choice), and completes it. Each capability carries a date-based version, so a business and an agent can negotiate the newest version both support.
Google's March 19, 2026 update added three optional capabilities: Cart (several items from one store at once), Catalog (live variants, inventory and pricing on demand) and Identity Linking (so logged-in shoppers get the loyalty benefits they would on your site).
Where Nudge fits. An agent can only act on what your catalog says. Nudge Catalog Enrichment scans every product for AI readability, checks findings against the live product page, and structures the catalog to fit ACP and UCP. Its Agentic Protocol Integration covers ACP, UCP and Shopify agent endpoints. Nudge Catalog Enrichment is the pillar built for this layer.

Where does UCP run today?
Today the main surfaces are AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. UCP-powered checkout puts a Buy button on eligible product listings, and shoppers pay with Google Pay using details saved in Google Wallet.
At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google announced Universal Cart, a cart that works across retailers and across Search and Gemini, and said UCP would also power purchases from Direct Offers and YouTube Shopping ads, "soon." It also said UCP checkout would come to Canada and Australia in the coming months, then the U.K. later. Google's own help page lists the United States, Canada and Australia for product eligibility.
If you are a UK brand, treat UCP checkout as not yet available to you. The standard itself is open and global; Google's checkout rollout is not.
What does a merchant need to use UCP checkout?
This part is easy to get wrong, so here are the requirements as Google states them.
A Merchant Center account with eligible products. Google's launch announcement says businesses need an active Merchant Center account and eligible products. Product data comes from your existing Merchant Center feeds.
A
native_commerceattribute. Only listings carrying thenative_commerce(checkout_eligibility) product attribute show the Buy button.Google Pay. You need a Google Pay & Wallet Console account, and your payment service provider must work with the Google Pay API. You do not need a Google Pay button on your own checkout.
Implementation and approval. Merchants complete the UCP integration, test in a sandbox, and go through Google's review. Google's help page says checkout is available to select merchants and onboarding is phased.
Seller of record. You keep the customer relationship and own the transaction.
Shopify brands have a shorter path. Search Engine Roundtable reported on September 22, 2026 that Google was emailing Shopify merchants that their products were now eligible for native checkout by default, and that it can be turned off under Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify admin. Check that setting rather than assuming either way.
Where Nudge fits. Merchant Center is also the feed AI Mode reads. The platform audits Merchant Center offers and writes attribute fixes, and drafts the ask when Merchant Center is not connected. Not sure how your products read to AI today? Run the free catalog scan.
UCP vs ACP: what is the difference?
OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is the other protocol brands hear about. Both are open standards under Apache 2.0. They were built by different groups for different front doors.
UCP | ACP | |
|---|---|---|
Launched | January 11, 2026 | September 29, 2025 |
Led by | Google, with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart | OpenAI and Stripe |
First surfaces | AI Mode in Google Search, Gemini | ChatGPT (Instant Checkout) |
Product data | Merchant Center feeds | Product feed shared with OpenAI |
Payments | Google Pay, payment handlers | Stripe Shared Payment Token, delegated payment spec |
The practical answer for a DTC brand is not to pick a side. A Shopify brand's catalog, feed and checkout setup serve both. For the full comparison, read our UCP vs ACP breakdown, and for the OpenAI side, what is the Agentic Commerce Protocol.
What is the status of UCP today?
Honest answer: early. The open spec is real and widely backed, and Google's checkout has been live for select U.S. merchants. But Google's own help page still says the checkout feature is available to select merchants, and the Merchant Center integration hub is described as early access, rolling out gradually in the United States.
Outside the U.S., Google has said Canada and Australia come next and the U.K. later. The spec is also still growing: the official site shows lodging as a draft and food as coming soon.
Do not build a quarter's plan around checkout volume from UCP. Do get your catalog and feed ready, because the same work serves every surface.
What should a DTC brand do now?
Fix the product data first. Agents compare attributes, answer questions and check stock. Google has added conversational attributes in Merchant Center for AI Mode; see our guide to those attributes and catalog enrichment for AI shopping agents.
Check Merchant Center and, on Shopify, the Agentic channel. Know whether native checkout is on, and decide on purpose.
Confirm your payment provider supports Google Pay tokens.
Measure whether you are shown at all. A Buy button only helps if the brand appears in the answer. Nudge AI Visibility tracks mentions, citations and competitors across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI surfaces, and its Agent Analytics shows agent traffic that GA4 does not.
Plan the page that follows. When a shopper arrives from an AI answer rather than inside a native checkout, Nudge Funnels serves a page matched to that arrival, with the default page as the control.

One limit: Nudge does not process payments or replace your payment provider, and it cannot switch on Google's checkout for you. Google's review and your payment setup stay with you.

Frequently asked questions
What does UCP stand for?
UCP stands for Universal Commerce Protocol. It is an open standard, announced by Google on January 11, 2026, that lets AI shopping agents and merchants handle product discovery, carts, checkout and order management through one shared specification instead of custom integrations.
Is UCP only for Google?
No. UCP is open source under Apache 2.0 and was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Google built the first implementation in AI Mode and Gemini, but any platform or agent can implement the spec. Google's checkout feature is the Google-specific part.
Do I need to do anything if I am on Shopify?
Check your settings. Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google began marking eligible Shopify merchants for native checkout by default in September 2026. You can review or turn it off under Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify admin. Also confirm your Merchant Center feed is clean.
Is UCP available in the UK?
Not for Google's checkout yet. Google said at Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026 that UCP-powered checkout would come to Canada and Australia in the coming months, then the U.K. later. The open spec itself is not limited by country.
How is UCP different from ACP?
ACP came from OpenAI and Stripe (September 29, 2025) and started in ChatGPT. UCP came from Google and partners (January 11, 2026) and started in AI Mode and Gemini. Both are open standards. Most brands will end up supporting both through the same catalog and feed.
